WEBVTT

00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:07.940
<v Trenton Reynolds>It is Thursday, January 25th, 2018.

00:00:08.940 --> 00:00:12.200
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>This is Room in the Trees, a podcast about being an artist.

00:00:12.920 --> 00:00:13.980
I am Trent Reynolds.

00:00:14.440 --> 00:00:35.080
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>And I am Sabrina Ward-Harson. I have something going on. It's called the Hair Initiative. It's effective. my headphones right now. The hair initiative. The hair initiative is that I've decided to grow my hair out, which I've never done. Ever. It's affecting my... As I'm leaning over, there's hair

00:00:35.080 --> 00:00:37.100
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>actually getting in my eyes.

00:00:37.100 --> 00:00:44.620
<v Trenton Reynolds>- And how does that make you feel? Is that a little alarming? Oh, it's not annoying?

00:00:44.620 --> 00:00:51.720
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>- It's annoying, yeah, it is actually annoying. It is, 'cause it's not long enough yet to fully go back into a decisive ponytail.

00:00:51.720 --> 00:01:11.840
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>It's like that, Cory's like, "You got it." But it's like just a little kind of nub of a ponytail. just a tiny, tiny, tiny, little tiny bit. A little bit of a ponytail. Yeah, but I'm taking all these vitamins. I'm putting this oil in my hair at night. It's like a whole, we call it the hair initiative because.

00:01:13.320 --> 00:01:15.600
<v Trenton Reynolds>What prompted the hair initiative?

00:01:17.600 --> 00:01:30.320
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>What prompted it? I think I just, I think Corey said something. He's like, I'd love to see you. what your hair... I don't know if these... I've always wanted to have it long, but I've just been impatient, and I've always just kept it short.

00:01:33.320 --> 00:01:36.240
<v Trenton Reynolds>Didn't you... You had long dreads, though, didn't you?

00:01:36.480 --> 00:01:52.040
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>I did. I had long braids. Yeah, I did. That was woven in with ribbons and... yarn and stuff. It was fantastic. I would totally, I love that. I love that. Loved it. But

00:01:52.040 --> 00:02:05.340
<v Trenton Reynolds>that was a serious, uh, uh, amount of, uh, material on your, wasn't it large? Like you

00:02:05.340 --> 00:02:16.560
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>had a lot of it. Yeah, I loved it. I had it when I was living in, uh, on the coast and California and I just drove and they would fly out of my hair while I was driving.

00:02:17.340 --> 00:02:18.360
Yeah, that's awesome.

00:02:18.600 --> 00:02:22.940
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>It was a real time. It was a decisive time in my life.

00:02:23.540 --> 00:02:26.420
<v Trenton Reynolds>So this is not that though? This is not that.

00:02:26.540 --> 00:02:31.560
This is just healthy, long... - Hair.

00:02:31.560 --> 00:02:37.700
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>- Healthy long hair. - I don't think it's gonna be very long, but it's just, like, if it gets to my shoulders, that would be incredible.

00:02:38.760 --> 00:02:45.580
<v Trenton Reynolds>- That is awesome. How long is the hair initiative? By the way, hair initiative, high, right?

00:02:51.760 --> 00:02:52.800
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>- High, hair initiative.

00:02:52.800 --> 00:02:58.480
<v Trenton Reynolds>- Yeah, that's, This could very, very strong branding potential.

00:03:00.760 --> 00:03:02.020
Hi.

00:03:02.020 --> 00:03:07.020
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>Hi hair. Hi. Hi hair growth. Yeah.

00:03:07.020 --> 00:03:11.820
<v Trenton Reynolds>So how long is the hair initiative been going on?

00:03:11.820 --> 00:03:13.400
I'd say a month.

00:03:13.400 --> 00:03:24.320
<v Trenton Reynolds>So okay. Yeah. Solid. month. Temptation to take some action on that hair? Tempted to cut it off? No, no, it's no,

00:03:24.520 --> 00:03:28.460
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>you're committed. I'm committed and I'm feeling the results. So

00:03:28.460 --> 00:03:36.520
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>it just needs to be noted. We'll see where it's at in a few months from now.

00:03:37.560 --> 00:03:59.200
<v Trenton Reynolds>Noted. We'll check in again about it. Very good. I have a hair growth, nothing so formal as the hair in this ship. But my wife, my wife, Laura, loves me to have a beard.

00:03:59.940 --> 00:04:00.760
Oh yeah, that's right.

00:04:01.800 --> 00:04:57.500
<v Trenton Reynolds>And last year for, her birthday I started in February the beginning of February her birthday is March 7th I started in February grow a beard and she loved it so I too am growing some some extra hair here I'm a about a week and a half in. - Wow. - So I got a little beard. I hate it. - Do you have the itchy, yeah. - Yeah, it's itchy. It's depressingly gray. I have so much gray in my beard. And I didn't really even know this until I grew the beard last year, how much gray there is, but I'm more gray than than you know otherwise I have brown hair but it kind of looks black just because I guess of the contrast or whatever anyway so I've got hi gosh ah

00:05:00.500 --> 00:05:01.500
<v Trenton Reynolds>ah

00:05:01.500 --> 00:05:15.000
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>I sent Molly a picture of some 80s hair the other day and I said there's a lot of noise that's going on with this hair these pictures I'm gonna send it to you speaking of hair and hair sounds which

00:05:15.000 --> 00:05:26.960
<v Trenton Reynolds>we did a few last year yeah that's right hair in the 80s yeah serious serious hair in the 80s lots lots of product.

00:05:31.280 --> 00:05:33.080
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>This is gonna blow your mind.

00:05:36.580 --> 00:05:42.080
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>You know what I love is that I just am in touch with my friends

00:05:42.080 --> 00:05:44.600
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>from so long ago all the time. I mean so...

00:05:44.600 --> 00:05:53.540
<v Trenton Reynolds>much to me. Oh my goodness. Is this all from a same school or same page? That's

00:05:53.540 --> 00:06:00.900
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>what I couldn't tell. It looks like the same background. Yeah, it looks like the same background.

00:06:00.900 --> 00:06:15.720
<v Trenton Reynolds>Oh my gosh. The concentration of the crimping density. What is that? What's it called when it's kind of teased like that?

00:06:15.720 --> 00:06:38.440
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>For people listening, we will put this in the show notes. it's like it's just extensive curling iron crimping spiral perm lots of hairspray lots of very very substantial bangs with the sort of curled back curled down the front thing

00:06:38.900 --> 00:06:39.480
Yeah.

00:06:40.980 --> 00:06:45.900
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>It's just like the height and the velocity of this hair is...

00:06:46.460 --> 00:06:51.680
<v Trenton Reynolds>Velocity is the word. That's the word. Velocity of the hair.

00:06:54.180 --> 00:06:54.900
<v Trenton Reynolds>There is...

00:07:15.700 --> 00:07:37.100
<v Trenton Reynolds>uh yeah so that's that my favorite one is the bottom left where she's just kind of like yeah no that's my hair it's like no no smile it's like nothing's going on here just uh just a little explosion on top of my head

00:07:37.100 --> 00:07:41.300
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>that's so true that's so true

00:07:41.300 --> 00:07:56.700
<v Trenton Reynolds>her hair is I think from her from her hairline to the top of her hair I believe is the same as from the top of her hair to her chin like it's as tall as her face so

00:07:56.700 --> 00:08:01.740
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>Or at least 83% is tall.

00:08:01.920 --> 00:08:28.260
<v Trenton Reynolds>Yeah. Well, I mean, she has some hair that's kind of sticking up a little bit. Wow. That is something else. And then the top second row far right, we've got a little bit of nostril flare. Or maybe it's natural nostril flare. But there's a kind of like pride or intensity. and that it's like, I got this.

00:08:32.260 --> 00:08:33.540
<v Trenton Reynolds>This is my hair.

00:08:38.540 --> 00:08:40.900
<v Trenton Reynolds>I'm going to hit this day.

00:08:42.500 --> 00:08:43.200
You love it.

00:08:43.860 --> 00:08:46.080
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>Take that picture. Take it.

00:08:47.800 --> 00:08:50.360
<v Trenton Reynolds>I dare you. Try to get this hair.

00:08:51.220 --> 00:08:55.760
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>This is the hair I wanted at one point in my life. I wanted and I tried for it.

00:08:56.360 --> 00:08:58.400
<v Trenton Reynolds>Did you swing? You didn't.

00:09:24.900 --> 00:10:05.140
<v Trenton Reynolds>You know, yeah, this is my oldest brother's generation. I remember, you know, the the white jeans and pink, pink plaid like button up, you know, I'm talking about. Mm hmm. And they're the pastel. Yeah. Pastel plaids. Yeah. We were sort of before time, but yeah, these are aspirational haircuts like we we wanted I wanted the male equivalent they weren't quite as big but the wave remember the wave yeah yeah my brother had wave and a little feathering on the side Michael Landon

00:10:05.140 --> 00:10:12.700
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>I think we need to see a male hair I never thought about the male hair at that time so

00:10:34.900 --> 00:10:37.680
<v Trenton Reynolds>fine young outstanding women

00:10:37.680 --> 00:10:42.440
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>so what's how's the fourth daughter Zoe

00:10:42.440 --> 00:11:14.580
<v Trenton Reynolds>we're already 20 minutes into our 30 minute episode and we haven't gotten past her Zoe's doing great she's I guess about a month in about a month old and she is sleeping a lot better just in the past couple days, which doesn't necessarily make it a pattern, but it's been really nice for a couple days at least. Yeah. She's doing well. She looks like she's going to have blue eyes. So we have two blue-eyed little girls and two brown-eyed.

00:11:17.460 --> 00:11:19.900
So... Oh, I love that.

00:11:19.900 --> 00:12:03.100
<v Trenton Reynolds>All is well. It's been, it has been a real challenge just to, it's kind of a, you know, renegotiating what, who's responsible for what, and just the logistics of every day, you know? And there's been a little bit too much TV, but, you know, at the moment we just got to be able to get through it, you know? Yeah. Sometimes TV is... Anyway, I'm going to cut that out. But that's the reality. It's like, we just need a little sanity around here. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So anyway, it's been a challenge, but good.

00:12:03.300 --> 00:12:08.720
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>so you're in the new you're in your studio it sounds fantastic

00:12:08.720 --> 00:12:36.680
<v Trenton Reynolds>yeah i was gonna ask you do it does it sound echoey nope it sounds very good okay good because uh i actually don't have any of the soundproofing in yet so this is just with uh we got i put it up a new wall got a new uh studio mate and he wanted to add a wall to the front of his space so We could have a little bit of privacy. And while he was doing that, I decided to add this wall so I could set up my little podcasting rig.

00:12:37.540 --> 00:12:38.040
That's great.

00:12:38.820 --> 00:13:02.820
<v Trenton Reynolds>So we're at the new studio space. Yeah, I'm really excited actually to be here at the studio space because several of the other artists here are interested in being more involved. So whether in this podcast or maybe just doing, you know, other stuff where... - Yeah. - We're creating things and recording and stuff like that. I'm excited for the possibilities.

00:13:02.820 --> 00:13:03.660
- Yeah.

00:13:04.760 --> 00:13:09.700
<v Trenton Reynolds>- So, good things going on. What about what's happening there?

00:13:10.600 --> 00:14:22.120
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>- I am excited because we are starting, I'm starting to prepare for some new true living experiences. And I sort of posted something on Instagram, Facebook about it, and just kind of curious to see where people were and kind of thinking if I was going to go around the country, different places where people kind of are. And so I'm setting one up in Fredericksburg just outside of Austin. which I'm really excited about and then one up in Door County on an island called Washington Island that's just full of lavender farms and cherries and a little I know and it's going to be a little bit longer and it's just really it's going be really special. It's going to be in the end of September. But I'm just, it's feeling really fun and fun. I'm working with Jamie Healy who helped me with the ones this past summer and so she's going to be working with me on all of them that we set up. So there's structure and containment as far as.

00:14:22.120 --> 00:14:25.240
<v Trenton Reynolds>- That's fantastic. - Yeah. - Do you have dates yet or do you?

00:14:25.240 --> 00:14:52.980
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>- I have dates for, yeah, dates for the one in Washington Island will be the 26th of September through the 30th. It's gonna be so special, a wonderful woman named Cindy who has a house up there. in the summertime spends it up there the rest of time she's in Nashville she's just totally she's all over it she's great so it's really fun you know what I

00:14:52.980 --> 00:16:03.840
<v Trenton Reynolds>love about that's been enabled in our time that's really kind of I don't know it's it's wonderfully human is because we have such such immediacy, such a great capacity to connect with people and figure out logistics spontaneously and immediately. I mean, it's like the whole Airbnb and the myriad of other services out there that connect people with somebody else that has resources or services for sale, right? Yeah. So the fact that you can... just kind of project this idea into the world and then there you have enough access to enough people that there's somebody that can respond and say yeah i have a place that you could use for it and somebody else can say yeah i can pitch in some time to help you organize it and carry it out and i don't know that's like there's you think of the internet as being something that's disconnected like that's you know technology is forcing us to be more isolated, but in a lot of ways, it enables this kind of collaboration that, I don't know, I just think it's awesome.

00:16:03.840 --> 00:17:05.480
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>- It's so true. It's so, like it always makes me a little bit wanna cry, because, it makes you wanna cry a little bit, because it just feels so moving. It's like people who maybe have read my books and feel closeness to me, and then I just feel it's such a wonderful warm welcoming loving gesture of their kindness and enthusiasm that just i feel like so connected and um really really special to experience because you don't get to have that connection with other people all right for years and years i didn't because there wasn't there was no way to connect this way So a lot of great-- there's also going to be one in Nashville, I think-- Asheville, North Carolina. So I've never been there. But we're probably going to do Portland, Seattle, Los Angeles maybe at some point, which I'll talk to you about, and then Texas. Asheville, New York.

00:17:07.780 --> 00:17:20.520
<v Trenton Reynolds>That sounds awesome. I'm excited for you. Sounds like a lot of work and a lot of traveling and logistics, but also just very fulfilling to get out there.

00:17:20.520 --> 00:17:21.140
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>Yeah, yeah.

00:17:42.500 --> 00:18:28.580
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>of your own presence. May you have joy and peace in the temple of your senses. May you receive great encouragement when new frontiers beckon. May you respond to the call of your gift and find the courage to follow its path. May the flame of anger free you from falsity. May warmth of heart keep your presence aflame and may anxiety never linger about you. May your outer dignity mirror an inner dignity of soul. May you take time to celebrate the quiet miracles that seek no attention. May you be consoled in the secret cemetery of your soul. May you experience each day is a sacred gift woven around the heart of wonder.

00:18:38.980 --> 00:18:42.800
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>That is from his book, Eternal Echoes, John O'Donohue.

00:18:43.800 --> 00:18:44.960
That's fantastic.

00:18:47.800 --> 00:18:59.700
<v Trenton Reynolds>Something that has colored that reading significantly for me in this moment is I've been staring at this picture of 80s haircuts While you were reading

00:19:02.320 --> 00:19:04.320
<v Trenton Reynolds>And there's this kind of strange

00:19:08.860 --> 00:19:19.700
<v Trenton Reynolds>Strange juxtaposition of you know very poignant language and these very aggressive hairstyles.

00:19:21.480 --> 00:19:24.300
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>And thinking, where are these women now?

00:19:25.400 --> 00:19:35.940
<v Trenton Reynolds>Yeah, kind of envisioning them hearing these words of wisdom and hope and insight and Like the symmetry of her soul.

00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:39.540
<v Trenton Reynolds>The symmetry of her hair.

00:19:41.800 --> 00:19:42.940
<v Trenton Reynolds>You know how the...

00:19:47.520 --> 00:19:53.060
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>- Oh God, people listening, just, you should be looking at these pictures at the same time we're talking, I hope you are.

00:19:53.060 --> 00:20:08.380
<v Trenton Reynolds>- Yes. And while you read that poem, maybe listen to it first without seeing the picture. But then the second time around, maybe be looking at the enjoy. It just changes the flavor.

00:20:11.720 --> 00:20:32.780
<v Trenton Reynolds>That is hilarious. Something that John O'Donohue is so, so, so good at is... I don't know. And I guess... I don't know, authors or poets or... He's such a masterful distillation of not just ideas,

00:20:35.320 --> 00:20:51.020
<v Trenton Reynolds>but like a tone. Like he's got this tone that he's able to somehow convey in words that is so... so empowering and so, I don't know. I just love, I love the way he puts words together.

00:20:53.680 --> 00:22:59.920
<v Trenton Reynolds>But it's symmetry, symmetry of soul. That's, I guess that's one of the things that, that stuck out to me. And I was thinking that, you know an experience just in daily life i've had opportunity now in whenever you're faced with a new situation new challenge i think it's an another opportunity to start to see the symmetries in your life you know it's because there's there's variety right there's new situations where you can either see how it fits with you and resonates with you somehow, or there's dissonance. There's some kind of tension that doesn't quite fit, and that could be a situation, a responsibility, an organization, a specific person or personality, a way of teaching, all these things, and you get this chance to kind of A-B test, all these new types of experiences and find what feels symmetrical, what feels like it resonates and matches or fits, and what doesn't quite match up. I don't know. I think it's so important to learn to see those symmetries, see those patterns, points in your life every day that feel like something hits, something matches. Exactly. Exactly. And to be present enough and aware enough to see those patterns so you can start aligning yourself with those types of people, experiences, places, environments. Exactly. And that's what's going to bring fulfillment and... and kind of resolution to the picture that is you, you know? It's like, and I don't know. And there's a lot in my new environment that I just do not resonate with. And somehow I've got to find a way to either distance myself from those aspects of the experience or align more fully with other parts to balance out that kind of imbalance, if that makes sense.

00:23:00.540 --> 00:23:01.040
Right.

00:23:01.500 --> 00:23:05.380
<v Trenton Reynolds>Anyway, I love that quote. There's a lot there.

00:23:07.460 --> 00:23:24.640
<v Sabrina Ward Harrison>I definitely feel that in my life these days, too, is just feeling the clarity of what is unfolding in a natural, clear way and noticing the things that feel, that bring my soul alive.
